The Salvation Army (TSA) is a Christian church and an international charitable organization. The organization reports a worldwide membership of over 1.7 million, consisting of soldiers, officers and adherents collectively known as Salvationists. Its founders sought to bring salvation to the poor and the handicapped by meeting both their "physical and spiritual needs". The Salvation Army presents in 132 countries, running charity shops, operating shelters for the homeless and giving humanitarian aid to developing countries.
The Salvation Army provides a free meal program, which is also known as their Food Pantries System. By supplying free fresh produce, canned goods, and healthy frozen items, food pantries provide valuable meal supplementation to those in need to maintain their independence and dignity.
TSA also has a community garden program. Each Salvation Army community garden provides a no-cost, renewable source of produce as well as vital work structure for those involved in the cultivation and care of the food. These sustainable programs present a viable long-term solution to chronic food insecurity while offering educational opportunities for children and adults alike.
