A recent study found that a particular type of antioxidant in cocoa prevented laboratory mice from gaining excess weight and actually lowered their blood sugar levels. Dark chocolate is also able to promote heart-healthy polyphenolic compounds, including butyrate, a fatty acid that improves insulin resistance and inflammation.
